Day 19 – Ngorongoro Crater

A Misty view of Ngorongoro Crater

We have an early start and we are on the road at 06h00 having been warned that there will be a lot of cars at the gate as this is the height of the season. Our early start pays off and we are 4th in line, but it is very misty at an altitude of over 2100m and in addition we are eating the dust of those in front of us.
In the Crater

We go through two gates and we have not been told we need to take a guide on b
oard, which is what their splurge tells us is necessary and many of the 4x4 web sites. They say a 4x4 is essential, but seriously a 4x2 would have no problem and we have been on far worse roads on this trip, in fact they were so good we were not sure we were even in the crater until we see Lake Magadi.
Zebra Scratching Post

Our expectation was wall to wall game, but it was not the case although we saw large herds of Wildebeest, Zebra and Buffalo, but the phenomenon of the collapsed volcano walled all round containing wild life is certainly worth seeing. We missed out on any of the big five, but saw Bat Eared Fox, Spotted Hyena, and a lot of bird life. I would question the cost of this excursion had it not been for the crater itself, the forest area, which was impressive and is another sight we can tick off our “to do list”.

Tomorrow we are off through the Serengeti where we will spend two days and nights and we are hoping to see a lot more game.
